Should you buy a headlamp or a handheld flashlight?
Short answer
Buy a headlamp for any task you perform with your hands — camp work, repairs, climbing, night running. Buy a handheld when you need to see something far away, because reach comes from a large reflector and a headlamp cannot have one. A 250-lumen Streamlight handheld reaches 447 metres while a 2,200-lumen Fenix headlamp reaches 229. Most people who work in the dark end up owning both.
This looks like a preference question and isn’t. The two form factors are good at genuinely different things, and the difference is measurable under the same standard — which means you can settle it with numbers rather than opinion.
Headlamp or handheld — which should you buy?
Headlamp for anything you do with your hands, which is most things.
Handheld when you need to see something far away.
If you only buy one, buy the headlamp. If you work in the dark regularly, you will end up with both, and the handheld will live in the truck.
How much further does a handheld really reach?
Roughly twice as far, on a ninth of the lumens. Here are published FL 1 figures, all measured to the same 0.25 lux threshold:

Read the two bolded rows together. A 250-lumen handheld reaches nearly twice as far as a 2,200-lumen headlamp.
SureFire explains why: candela quantifies the brightest spot in the beam, and reaching distance requires optics that produce a narrow, high-intensity beam — which necessarily give up the wide, low-intensity spill. Producing high candela needs reflector or optic diameter, and a headlamp is constrained by what you are willing to wear on your forehead.
Fenix states the same trade from the other end: headlamps give a broad even flood ideal for illuminating your field of view; flashlights give a focused beam for pinpointing specific areas or lighting distant objects. And because a handheld does not have to be small and light, it can carry more battery.
This is the practical conclusion: if your actual problem is distance, no amount of headlamp brightness solves it. More on why the lumen figure misleads in how many lumens you actually need.
What does a headlamp win?
Hands, aim and weight — and the first two are worth more than they sound.
Hands is obvious until you count the tasks: tying in, changing a tyre, cooking, first aid, holding a rope, reading a map, opening a pack. A handheld in your teeth is a well-known posture and a bad one.
Aim is the underrated one. A headlamp points where you are looking, always, with no conscious act. A handheld requires you to aim it, which is a small continuous tax that you notice most when you are tired.
Weight favours headlamps decisively because they have to be light:
- Nitecore UT27 — 74 g
- Petzl ACTIK CORE — 88 g, SWIFT RL — 92 g
- Black Diamond Storm 500-R — 120 g
- Fenix HM65R V2.0 — 144 g
- Ledlenser EXH8 — 345 g
That last one is the exception that explains the rule: it is heavy because it is certified for explosive atmospheres and runs on AA cells, and in the job it is built for, that is the right trade.
What about helmets?
Both work, and this is often the real deciding factor for work use.
Petzl states that all its headlamps can be mounted on a Petzl helmet using the front clips or a mounting accessory, and sells adhesive plates designed not to damage third-party shells — with the sensible caveat to verify compatibility with the helmet manufacturer first.
Industrial models often ship helmet-ready: Nightstick’s XPP-5454G includes both an elastic headband and a rubber hard-hat strap in the box.
And some handhelds are really helmet lights. Streamlight’s Sidewinder Compact II has a 185° tilting body that rotates 360° on a helmet mount, weighs 68 g, and is IPX7 — which makes the form-factor question less binary than it first appears.
Does red light actually preserve night vision?
Partly — and the strongest source on it also warns against overusing it.
The FAA’s guidance for pilots is the best-documented statement available: while complete dark adaptation requires at least 30 minutes of total darkness, a pilot can achieve a moderate degree of dark adaptation within 20 minutes under dim red lighting.
The same paragraph carries the counterweight, and it rarely gets quoted: red light severely distorts colours, especially on charts, and can cause serious difficulty focusing the eyes on nearby objects. The FAA advises its use only where optimum outside night vision is genuinely necessary. The FAA’s own pilot vision material lists red cockpit lighting among factors with adverse effects on visual performance.
Worth noting that manufacturers are restrained here too. Black Diamond lists red LED night vision as a feature and makes no physiological claim at all. Petzl markets red, green and blue on its hunting and fishing models for staying out of sight of animals — concealment, not your own dark adaptation.
Also relevant: red modes are typically 1 to 2 lumens. Some of the benefit is simply that the light is dim.

- A headlamp, for most people. It covers the largest share of real tasks, leaves both hands free, and the modern flood-and-spot models handle middle-distance work adequately. Buy a handheld first only if your actual need is spotting at distance — searching, security, marine or wide-area work — where a headlamp of any brightness will not reach.
