Every other brand we carry makes hardware that clamps, grips or slides along a rope. Sterling makes the rope. They've been doing it in Maine since 1992, they've been responsible for several of the genuine firsts in life-safety cordage — including the first 100% polyester static rope and the first Technora fire escape line — and their plants run on renewable energy. The company started in 1992 in Maine and has spent every year since on the same narrow problem: how to build cordage that people can trust their lives to. Manufacturing is in the US and Canada, they’re ISO 9001, and their products are third-party tested against CE, NFPA and ANSI standards. Their rope plants run on 100% renewable energy, and they’ve been recycling rope since the company began.
The firsts that actually mattered
Plenty of companies claim innovation. Sterling’s list is specific and checkable.
The first 100% polyester static rope — the HTP. This matters more than it sounds. Nylon absorbs water, and wet nylon shrinks, stiffens and loses strength. Polyester barely does. For a rescue team working a river, a storm or a flooded confined space, a rope that behaves the same wet as dry changes the risk calculation.
The first 48-carrier static sheath construction, for durability where rope meets edge and hardware.
The first 100% Technora heat- and abrasion-resistant ropes for the fire industry — and Sterling helped FDNY create the first firefighter escape kit. That is about as direct a line as exists between a manufacturer’s product development and someone getting out of a building alive.
Rope is the part you replace
Here is the practical thing about cordage that hardware people sometimes forget: rope is a consumable.
A carabiner might outlive your career. A rope has a working life measured in seasons, and it retires on a schedule whether or not it looks tired. Which means the rope you choose isn’t a one-time decision — it’s a relationship with a manufacturer whose consistency you need batch after batch, year after year.
That’s why specialisation matters here more than in hardware. Sterling doesn’t make rope alongside forty other product lines. Rope is the company.

They only do this. Specialisation compounds. Thirty years of solving one problem produces knowledge that a diversified manufacturer can’t shortcut.
Their innovations solved real problems. Polyester static for wet environments. Technora for heat. These weren’t features looking for a customer — they came from someone’s bad day.
They make it in North America, on renewable power, and they recycle it. That combination is genuinely rare in this industry, and it’s worth something to buyers who care where their kit comes from.
