Ronin

Placentia, California — power ascenders designed by people who used to build rescue hoists for helicopters.

There are only two serious answers to "how do I stop climbing this rope by hand" — Skylotec's ActSafe range and Ronin. Ronin is the American one, built in Placentia, California by engineers who came out of the helicopter rescue hoist business, and its argument is weight and rope tolerance: around 9 kg with the battery, 400 lb working load, and it will run on 10–13 mm line instead of demanding one exact diameter. If you already own static rope, that last detail is the whole conversation.

What we'd reach for

  • Titan LiftThe headline unit. Around 20 lb with the 48 V battery, 400 lb safe working load, variable 0.5–1.5 ft/s up and 2.8 ft/s down, roughly two hours to recharge. Ronin calls it the smallest and lightest powered ascender made, and against the units we can find specs for, that holds.

Somebody had to build the American one.

For years the answer to “I am tired of climbing this rope” was Swedish, and then German — ActSafe, now owned by Skylotec, and covered on that page. Ronin is the other answer, and it comes out of Placentia, California.

The origin is the most useful thing on this page. Ronin was engineered by a group who came out of the rescue industry, designing hoists and winches for helicopters. That is a discipline where weight is not a preference and where the device has to work the first time, cold, in bad conditions, with someone’s life hanging off it. You can see both of those constraints in the product.

What it is, in numbers

The Titan Lift weighs about 20 lb — 9 kg — with the battery in it. It lifts 400 lb (181 kg). It climbs at a variable 0.5 to 1.5 ft/s and descends at up to 2.8. The 48 V lithium pack recharges in around two hours.

And it runs on 10 to 13 mm static kernmantle or aramid line.

That last number is the one to sit with, because it is where Ronin actually separates itself. Every ActSafe unit takes 11 mm and only 11 mm. Ronin takes a band. If your team already stocks 11.5 mm, or 12.5, or standardized on something years ago, one of these devices fits your rope and the other one makes you buy new rope.

The Ronin Lift covers the same ground with 350 ft of single-line travel, or 1,200 lb rigged at a 3:1. Inside, a capstan drive self-feeds the rope when you load it — a small thing that stops being small when you are doing it in gloves at the top of a tower.

Where Ronin wins, and where it doesn’t

We would rather put this in a table than let you find out on site.

Ronin is lighter. 9 kg against 12.5 for the ActSafe ICX, and considerably less than the ACX. When the ascender has to be carried to the anchor rather than staged at it, that is the argument.

Ronin takes your rope. 10–13 mm against a fixed 11 mm.

Ronin is made in the United States. For utility and municipal buyers with domestic-preference rules, that is not sentiment, it is procurement.

ActSafe lifts more and goes further. 220 to 250 kg against 181, and 550 to 750 m of range against Ronin’s 350 ft on a single line. For a wind turbine or a tall tower, that gap decides it.

ActSafe has powered descent and an emergency descent function. Ronin descends on a manual braking system, and its documentation calls for a secondary backup rope. Neither approach is wrong — one is simpler and one is more automated — but they are different operations and your rescue plan has to know which one it has.

ActSafe is sealed harder. IP55 on the ICX, IP67 on the RCX. We have not found a published IP rating for Ronin.

ActSafe has a gasoline option. The PMX runs 750 m on a tank. Ronin has no answer to a site with no power.

Buy Ronin for weight and rope flexibility. Buy ActSafe for endurance, capacity and weather. Anyone who tells you one of them is simply better is selling one of them.

Where Ronin fits

Powered rope access. Repeated ascents on towers, stacks, shafts and structures, where the climb is the fatigue and the fatigue is the risk.

Material lifting. The material lift kit is the underrated half of this brand. Tools, transformers and cargo currently go up by hand or on a rope and a prayer; a powered capstan changes the labour maths on a whole job.

Technical rescue. Pick-offs and extractions, with the tripod mount as the accessory that matters for confined space teams — it turns a manual retrieval winch into a powered one.

Utilities and tower work. The core buyer. Repeated daily climbs, crews with long careers, and employers who have started doing arithmetic on shoulder and knee injuries.

Tree care. Tree Care Industry Magazine covered the Ronin Lift for exactly the reason the company leads with: the argument isn’t speed, it’s the number of years you get to keep doing this.

Why we rate them

The provenance is the right provenance. Helicopter rescue hoists are a harder engineering problem than tower ascent, and the habits carry — obsessive weight discipline and a device that works cold.

They sell the wear parts. Rope brushes, rubber motor protectors, friction bollard replacements. A powered device whose friction surface you can replace yourself is a device the manufacturer expects you to keep for a decade. The brands that hide consumables are telling you something else.

Rope tolerance is a real engineering choice. Accepting a 3 mm band instead of one diameter is harder to design and it costs the manufacturer the rope sale. Ronin did it anyway.

What we’d want you to know

We could not establish Ronin’s founding year, its founders, or whether Placentia is manufacture or final assembly. The company’s About page is brand mythology — masterless samurai, freedom from gravity — with no corporate detail behind it.

That is not a mark against the hardware, which is well specified and openly documented. But every other page on this site opens with a year and a name, and this one can’t. We would rather tell you that than pad it.
