ISC is what you reach for when the job is genuinely industrial. Their descenders carry two-person rescue loads as standard rather than as a footnote, their backup devices are trusted on the ropes that matter, and their edge rollers exist because someone finally took the sharp parapet seriously. Not a climbing brand that also sells to industry — an industrial height-safety manufacturer, forging and machining its own hardware in North Wales.
Drive ten minutes east out of Bangor, on the North Wales coast, and you reach the Llandygai Industrial Estate. That is where International Safety Components has been forging, pressing and machining height-safety hardware since the company was incorporated in 1994.
It is worth pausing on the geography. DMM started in Bethesda, a couple of miles up the road, and now forges in Llanberis just over the hill. Two of the most respected metalworking names in the rope world sit within a few miles of each other, under the same mountains. Something in that corner of Wales makes very good hardware.
Built for industrial loads, not adapted to them
The clearest way to understand ISC is the D4.
It is rated for 240 kg with anti-panic. That number matters because it puts a two-person rescue — a technician descending with a casualty — inside the device’s normal working range rather than at the ragged edge of it. Plenty of excellent descenders are rated to 150 kg and ask you to add braking carabiners and expert judgement above that. The D4 simply carries the load.
That is ISC’s whole personality. This is a company whose registered activities literally read forging, pressing, stamping and roll-forming of metal — it makes industrial components for people whose working day involves industrial consequences.
Where ISC earns its place
Rope access. Descenders, rope grabs, backup devices and connectors for technicians who are on rope daily. The RED back-up and the Rocker are fixtures on European industrial jobs.
Confined space. Tripods, rescue winches and fall-arrest blocks as a rated system. This is a category most rope brands leave alone, and ISC owns it.
Fall protection. Mobile fall arresters, anchors and blocks built to industrial standards rather than adapted from climbing.
Edge management. Edge rollers and rope protection — a genuinely under-served category, and one ISC has taken more seriously than almost anyone. Most rope failures are edge failures.
Arborist. The Rope Wrench and APEX did as much as any product to make single-rope technique practical in tree care.
Why we rate them
They make hardware for the harder version of the job. Two-person loads, confined space retrieval, sharp industrial edges, military and tactical use. ISC’s range is shaped by the scenarios that break other kit.
