Compton, California, since 1992 — one job, done at American construction scale, with a test lab that publishes its own numbers.

FallTech was founded in 1992, the year OSHA tightened its fall protection rules, by a man who had been making tool belts for construction crews. Thirty years later it is still in Southern California, still doing exactly one thing — "fall protection is all we do" — and it runs its own ISO 17025-accredited test lab and publishes the reports. This is the brand for the crew that has to outfit twenty people to OSHA and ANSI standards on Monday, and it is the best value on this page for that job.

In 1992, OSHA tightened its fall protection rules and a lot of American construction sites discovered they were out of compliance overnight.

Michael Dancyger was making professional-grade tool belts at the time. He understood two things the incumbents apparently did not: what a tradesman actually wears all day, and that the crews who now needed fall protection had no idea where to start. FallTech’s first product was a Roofer’s Fall Protection Kit in a Bucket — harness, lanyard, anchor, rope, in a bucket, done.

That is a remarkably clear-headed first product. It answers the real question, which was never “which harness” but “what do I need to be legal and alive on a roof tomorrow.”

Fall protection is all they do

Every other brand on this site arrived at work-at-height from somewhere else. Petzl came from caving. Edelrid and Teufelberger came from rope. DMM came from climbing hardware. Skylotec came from industrial safety broadly.

FallTech started at fall protection and never went anywhere else. Their own line is “fall protection is all we do,” and the catalog bears it out — body wear, anchorages, lanyards, SRLs, confined space, horizontal and vertical systems, tool tethering, rescue and descent, and pre-assembled kits. No climbing range, no camping sideline, no caving heritage.

That focus shows up as breadth within the category rather than across categories. There are more than twenty distinct harness families, because a tower climber, a welder, a utility lineman and a roofer are four different problems.

The test lab is the point

Here is the part we rate most highly, and it is not a product.

FallTech is an ISO 9001:2015 manufacturer that runs an ISO 17025:2017-accredited test laboratory in-house, and it publishes the Declarations of Conformity and test reports. Not “meets ANSI.” The actual documents.

They have also held a voting seat on the ANSI/ASSP Z359 committee since 2014 — which means they help write the standard their products are measured against, in the open, alongside their competitors.

If you have ever tried to substantiate a compliance claim from a spec sheet, you know how unusual it is to simply be handed the report.

The FT-X, and why cable is losing

The FT-X EdgeCore is the most interesting thing FallTech has built lately.

Leading-edge work — where the lifeline can run over the edge of a deck or a beam — has historically meant a steel cable SRL, because webbing does not survive contact with steel edges. Steel cable SRLs are heavy, and a heavy device hanging off your dorsal D-ring all day is its own hazard.

EdgeCore is a synthetic lifeline with Kevlar cables inside a UV-resistant composite structure. It is roughly 40% lighter than the steel equivalent, FallTech states a breaking strength more than three times that of conventional 3/16-inch galvanized wire rope, and it is ANSI Z359.14-2021 Class 2 tested over both a .005-inch razor edge and abrasive concrete.

The detail that gives away who designed it: SpeedLink. On a twin-leg unit, you can replace one retractable in the field instead of retiring the pair. Any safety manager who has thrown away a functioning half of a twin SRL will recognize the annoyance being solved.

Where FallTech fits

Construction fall protection. Harnesses, lanyards, anchors and SRLs for roofing, steel, concrete and general trades — the volume of the American jobsite.

Confined space. Tripods, winches and retrieval SRLs for entry work.

Utilities and arc flash. Carbon FT-Arc Tower, FT-Weld and the arc-rated range, for linemen and hot work where the harness itself has to survive an event.

Tool tethering. Dropped-object prevention — a category that has gone from afterthought to jobsite requirement, and one nobody else on this site covers.

Why we rate them

It is the value brand that doesn’t feel like one. Everything else on this page is premium and mostly earns it. But a foreman outfitting a twenty-person crew is not buying one carabiner, and FallTech makes the arithmetic work without dropping below ANSI.

They show their work. A published ISO 17025 test report from an in-house accredited lab is a stronger claim than any amount of marketing copy, and almost nobody in this industry bothers.

They know their customer is American. OSHA and ANSI Z359 are the operating environment, not a certification they translated into. For a Chicago crew being inspected against OSHA 1926 Subpart M, that alignment is worth real money.

Thirty years, one problem, still in Southern California. From a bucket on a roof in 1992 to a Compton plant with its own test lab — same problem the whole way.
